I am shopping for optics too, but with a bit different agenda than you have. I currently have a Leupold 25X scope with a slik 'pod, and an elderly pr. of Zeiss "Dialyt" 8X30 roof prisim binocs. The scope is a teriffic value and the variable would be even better than mine. The Leupold has the best weight vs. quality relationship of any I've seen.
My own agenda has been to replace the 8X30s with a higher power binocular so that on most occasions I can leave the scope behind. For sure, when above timberline distances are an issue, the spotter will be along, but otherwise it is just not necessary for me.
Point here being......In shopping the best quality optics available, I've settled on either a Swarovski or Leica 10X42. The optics on these are stunning. Compared to my old Zeiss (state of the art for it's time)these new glasses will blow you away and the weight is reasonable @ 30 oz. or so. I've checked out some 10X50s and they are even better, but very large and heavy. The very best glass that I looked at was a Leica 12X50 these were simply unreal to someone like me who has not followed the developments in optic technology. But those babies were REALLY big and heavy so I'm settling on the 10X42s and will probably choose the Leica based upon better ergonomics for me.
