Hi Scott,

Sundles is right on all accounts. I grew up in Oregon and except for college and a couple of years after, I have lived in Oregon. I started out hunting blacktail as kid because I did not have any way to get to the east side. I have killed a couple of nice blacktails one making the book, but I soon got tired of wet clothes and fighting the undergrowth. I think the area around Cave Junction does offer so what more open country. Most of my deer and elk hunting takes place in Eastern Oregon. If I can get my tags, I rifle hunt. If not, I take up the bow. Sundles is right about the people, too many. Yet, you can still experience some good hunting. If you have the time to poke around and use some good topo maps you can find areas to hunt that will take you away from the crowds. Usually, it means hunting the stuff most other people will not hunt. Usually the roughest country or the pockets that are too far off the beaten track for most folks.

My hunting partner and I have found such a place and have been hunting it the last 12 years. It is about a 5 square mile pocket. It is rough and you will not see alot of deer, but you see very few hunters, if any. We usually get at least one buck. If we do not it is usually because we have shot like we have never seen a rifle. Last year it all came together and I was able to break the 30 inch barrier. Not all the deer are trophies like this one, but considering the area we hunt and the work involved in packing out any animal we kill, all of the bucks we have killed are trophies to us. My point is with a little extra effort, you can make it work even here in Oregon.
